Arrest In Theft of Less Lethal MPD Device
On March 9, 2022, Nashua Police made an arrest in connection with the theft of a Manchester Police less-lethal weapon system.
On February 15, 2022, Manchester Police officers responded to a call to aid an officer in need in the area of Beech Street and Laurel Street.
Once the incident was resolved, officers found the hatch of their police cruiser open and determined that the lock was faulty. At that time officers also realized that a Deftec 40 mm single launcher was missing from the back of the cruiser. This is a less-lethal tool for the department and officers use soft-tipped projectile munitions in this device.
Manchester Police immediately began investigating this case. Since the time of the theft, significant investigative efforts have been underway, including the use of confidential sources and covert methods in an attempt to locate the property and apprehend those involved in the theft. Due to the sensitive nature of the investigation, information was not made public.
The cruiser was also taken out of service immediately and issues with the lock are being assessed.
Yesterday, Nashua Police arrested Joshua Smith and located the launcher in his possession. Smith was charged accordingly.
We appreciate the assistance of Nashua Police in this investigation and the ultimate recovery of this property.
